In this age of technological advancements, our connection with Nature has diminished alarmingly. We are becoming strangers in our home–the Earth. We miss the subtle changes in the wind, the calls of birds, the smell of the fragrant ground beneath our feet. We spend more time indoors on computers and TVs, which leaves little time for deep inner journeys or quiet walks in the woods. Yet, who we are and what we are–the very root of our identity–springs from the Earth.

We are suffering from a lack of contact with nature, a nature-deficit that not only leads to ill health, but also gives us a sense that something is missing in our lives. Our children are especially vulnerable. We are witnessing a whole new generation that is growing up “hooked” to an electronic device of one kind or another. According to a 2010 study by the Kaiser Family Foundation, children today are spending practically every waking minute (7.5 hours per day) — except for the time in school — using a smart phone, computer, television or other electronic device”. [1]

It is no coincidence that another study found that Americans spend less than one hour a week outside. Our reduced time out-of-doors is directly linked to the increased time that people are spending in-doors on electronics.

Astonishingly, the recurrence of Rickets, a disorder that weakens children’s bones, and which was prominent in the 17th century, is returning! The cause: children rarely play outside, and without a healthy dose of exposure to the sun, their bodies are unable to create the vitamin D they need for strong bones. A recent BBC news report indicated that 20% of children tested in the UK had bone deficiencies linked to low levels of vitamin D.[2]

Other physical, emotional and even spiritual ailments from lack of nature contact and outdoor activity include:

• Increased levels of stress and illness;
• Obesity and sedentary lifestyle;
• ADHD and apathy;
• Sleep disorders and fatigue; and
• Lack of creativity, and even a loss of a sense of life purpose.

I will add to this list as well those “intangible” but nonetheless essential human experiences of beauty, joy, and inspiration that can come from observing a brilliant orange hued sunset, the shining stars in a midnight blue sky, or a shimmering rainbow.

Our disconnection from nature is, of course, also leading to all kinds of environmental harm. This is why it is vital that we understand not only how important our role is in nature’s sphere, but also how crucial nature’s role is in our lives.  Usually, when we speak about protecting the environment, we speak about habitat protection, reducing carbon emissions, and banning toxins. These external acts are absolutely essential, but without a vision for ethical goodness toward all life, the “environmental cause” is unlikely to succeed in the long run.

We do not need to try to solve global environmental problems on our own; Nature can be our partner in the truest sense of the word. “Partnering with Nature” means opening up to an ongoing conversation with nature, to listen and learn from the smallest living being to the Earth herself.  Solar power is one of the best examples of how we have learned from a natural process – photosynthesis – to create sustainable, non-polluting energy from the sun. Photosynthesis means a “synthesis of light,” and is the amazing method that plants use to create a life-giving elixir, while also producing (as a by-product) oxygen. [3]

John Todd, the founder of the New Alchemy Institute, also studied how nature cleans and purifies water by using all natural processes and living organisms including: sunlight, bacteria, green plants, and animals like fish and snails. The Living Machine® system[4] (based on Todd’s original concept) installed at the Port of Portland will reduce the facility’s water consumption by treating up to 5,000 gallons per day of wastewater. In addition, the beautiful system will educate people about the tremendous ability and cost effectiveness of a natural water purification system.

We will be able to solve problems, such as global warming, when we gain greater awareness about who and what we are in relation to the Earth and other living creatures. We just need to start paying more attention to nature and gaining a better understanding about natural processes and cycles. By learning from and working with the wisdom of trees for example, we can heal and transform our ailing atmosphere. Trees, of course, have been on Earth for over 400 million years. Beyond the miraculous feat of supporting an atmosphere that allows complex life to exist, plants create ecosystems that provide shelter. For example, the presence of trees along a streambed shades the stream water, lowering the temperature, which allows the water to hold higher-levels of oxygen. Higher oxygen levels support more life.

Ensuring that trees are protected and restored is a key step to saving the planet. An innovative and profound new program to clone the world’s most ecologically valuable tree species and plant millions of copies is underway by a group called Archangel Ancient Tree Archive. The trees will store carbon while creating healthful oxygen, preserve ecosystem diversity, and be used for medicines.

Beyond maintaining ecological balance and good health, Nature also offers us an opportunity to connect with the sacred. Nature is a portal to an infinite and timeless realm where we can gain insights into a larger reality that is beyond our day-to-day comprehension. Great spiritual leaders like Buddha, Moses, and Jesus all experienced divinity directly by spending time in nature. Buddha gained enlightenment under a fig tree. The tree became known as the Bo tree (short for Bodhi or enlightenment) and the site was later named The Immovable Spot. Jesus spent 40 days and 40 nights in the wilderness. Moses had direct communication with God through a burning bush. For thousands of years, people went on pilgrimages that took them through, and to, some of the most beautiful natural places in the world. Today people are experiencing life transforming benefits from going on spiritual nature retreats and Vision Quests.

For careworn and busy people, a Vision quest or nature retreat may simply offer contemplative and peaceful time — away from demanding schedules and ringing phones. Others embark on a quest as a way to deal with important life passages, such as death, divorce, or change of career. Some people partake in a spiritual based quest as one path of soul seeking. As people unwind in nature, new revelations about their lives and the universe come to the surface.

A series of studies published in the June 2010 issue of the Journal of Environmental Psychology, found that being outside in nature makes people feel more alive. People on wilderness excursions report that just recalling outdoor experiences increased their feelings of happiness and well-being. [5]

The cure for what “ails us” is right outside our very doors!

Are we here to dominate the Earth, and destroy or ignore the “lower” animals and plants?

I do not think so.

Rather, I believe that we have been uniquely endowed to care for the great diversity of life, and even the Earth herself.  I believe that we can bring greater life, joy, and wisdom to the Planet. Our role on Earth is to appreciate, learn from, and care for, the great diversity of life as if it were our own life-because ultimately it is.

By adopting a new paradigm that holds that all living things have innate value, and by applying what we learn from nature about how to live on Earth, we can save the Planet, and ourselves.

I invite you to see the possibilities for yourself and to view nature with new eyes. My hope is that by gaining a greater awareness of your own connection to nature, you will join me in fostering a new ethic-one that reveres all life on Earth. [6]

By the massive earthquakes of Magnitude 9 and surreal massive tsunamis, more than 10,000 people are still missing…even now… It has been 16 days already since the disaster happened. What makes it worse is that water at the reactors of Fukushima Nuclear Plants started to leak, and it’s contaminating the ocean, air and water molecule of surrounding areas.

Human wisdom has not been able to do much to solve the problem, but we are only trying to cool down the anger of radioactive materials in the reactors by discharging water to them.

Is there really nothing else to do?

I think there is. During over twenty year research of hado measuring and water crystal photographic technology, I have been witnessing that water can turn positive when it receives pure vibration of human prayer no matter how far away it is.

Energy formula of Albert Einstein, E=MC² really means that Energy=number of people and the square of people’s consciousness.

Now is the time to understand the true meaning. Let us all join the prayer ceremony as fellow citizens of the planet earth.  I would like to ask all people, not just in Japan, but all around the world to please help us to find a way out the crisis of this planet!!

I love this exuberant and inspirational blog post from author of Most Good Least Harm, Zoe Weil. Zoe is the co-founder and President of the Institute for Humane Education (IHE). IHE works to create a world in which we all live humanely, sustainably, and peaceably.

Yesterday I hiked the last leg of the Appalachian Trail (AT) up Katahdin Mountain in Maine with my good friend and fellow humane educator, Freeman Wicklund. Freeman began the AT in Georgia in March and hiked more than 1,300 miles to Connecticut before a stress fracture in his foot laid him up for a month of healing. He hitchhiked up to Maine on Labor Day to resume the trail, this time heading south.

We started climbing the magnificent, but arduous Katahdin at 8 a.m. While the mountain was open to hikers, it was a “Class II” day meaning that hiking beyond treeline was not recommended. Katahdin was shrouded in cold fog with intense wind gusts. There are sections of the ascent where there are thousand foot drops on either side of a fairly narrow crest. There’s no question that this can be a dangerous mountain.

Just before we broke treeline we passed a small, older woman who had been hiking the AT in sections. She was about to finish the AT at Katahdin, having just turned 70 years old two days earlier. Shortly after meeting her we ran into two tall, strong, fit, 40-something men on their way down. Excited to see people already descending at 11 a.m. (we must be close I thought), I asked about their summit experience. Turns out they hadn’t made it. The stronger and fitter of the two remarked that they’d gotten within 1.5 miles of the top but turned back because the winds were so strong he was almost knocked down (despite, as he said, being 175 pounds). It wasn’t worth it, he continued. I think he was trying to convince himself of the rightness of his own personal decision, so I was not deterred, but I felt uneasy, especially given that I only weigh 96 pounds. I also found myself thinking about the 70-year-old woman who didn’t weigh much more than I. We’d encountered some very challenging climbing, and the rocks were slippery. The winds were already pretty high. If it was going to get even worse, would we make it? Would she?

As the ascent got steeper and more exposed, we encountered a young woman who had hunkered down among some rocks while her companions continued the ascent. She was uncomfortable with the quarter mile of narrow rocks in the high winds. Another warning. Freeman and I carefully continued, staying low and following the 3-point rule (keep three limbs on the rock at all times rather than stand up and walk on the slippery, jagged rocks and risk a wind gust knocking you off the mountain). We made it just fine and hiked the final 1.3 miles on the beautiful and flat Tablelands to Maine’s tallest peak. We ate a leisurely lunch in a spot protected from the winds, missing the successful ascent of the 70-year-old woman we’d met below. But we ran into her and her companion on the way back, and were delighted to know she’d made it. We descended in close proximity, all of us proceeding with some trepidation as the hard spots are often much harder coming down than going up. She managed each of them with such grace, and I found myself in awe of this remarkable woman, who at age 70 had accomplished an extraordinary feat – completion of a 2,000+ mile journey on a harrowing mountaintop. I thought of the much younger, fitter, stronger man we’d passed who’d turned back. I don’t by any means want to criticize his decision. More than half the climbers turned back that day – a wise choice for them. But the tenacity, perseverance, and joyful beauty of this dedicated and strong-willed woman inspired me. She was not at all foolhardy: she planfully prepared, gave herself plenty of time, and took great care in climbing safely. She was not in danger, because she was ready. Ready to succeed at her goal; ready to live every moment of her life fully; ready to embrace her dreams; ready to defy stereotypes that diminish us at all ages.

Would that we all lived with such exuberance and challenged ourselves to achieve all that we are able.

While the news headlines seem to be talking about BP’s share prices, arguing over Obama’s clean energy proposals, and needing to find blame, we might take a moment to remember the water. Dr Masaru Emoto (author of The Hidden Messages in Water) wrote this post and this prayer back in May, but it is worth remembering and revisiting.

I saw news in this morning about oil spill in Gulf of Mexico. In the news, the Japanese TV crew chartered a boat and got the scene where the huge amount of oil was spilled in the gulf of Mexico. They departed from the mouth of Mississippi River and they got the scene after 1 hour. Huge amount of oil is gushing out everyday and the reporter said it is just a matter of time that the oil is reaching the shore.

After the reporter arrived the scene by a boat, she scooped sea water with a cup and she checked what’s inside. Then there was a young fish carcass in the cup. It was only one small scoop but the fish carcass was there. I shuddered to think how many lives are lost by this oil spill in the entire ocean.

Then, when they were on the way back, they encountered dolphins at ocean area where they should have never been seen before. The dolphins were running away from the scene where the oil spilled and they were moving towards the shore. What will happen if oils are surging ahead to the shore. The answer is obvious.

As a water researcher, I have been always thinking why the oils and water cannot be combined. Perhaps scientists can answer this question with using an equation however, it is difficult to understand and I think their answer cannot answer my essential question “Why is that?” So, from a viewpoint of a water messenger, I would like to mention my opinions regarding this question.

“Water is the principal of all things.”

Nobody will deny this word which was said by Thales, the Greek Philosopher in 2500 BC. All things were created by blueprint of creator in water and we can say that water should be able to combine with all things. In another word, water likes everything.

However, water cannot combine with oils, meaning water dislike oils. Maybe, it is not appropriate to use the word “like” or “dislike” because water does not have emotions. The noble role of water is to maintain and protect life phenomenon in great nature so water can refuse to things to disturb its role.

There is another phenomenon that water does not appreciate. It is a gap issue on energy. Water does not discriminate anything and go with the spirit of conciliation and peaceful co-existence. If there is a situation of unbalance of energy happened, water is warning us by becoming Tsunami, Hurricane or earthquake.

By the way, why are oil products giving human bodies bad effect even though Oils are products of nature which originally stayed in underground. My answer is this.
I think oils are liquefied organism which was accumulated in the underground since this earth created and any organism contains spirits of our ancestor or animals.

I think all the living organism which have not been able to ride on Noah’s Ark when Atlantis and Mu were vanished, were lost in the underground and they have became a part of petrol. So, my idea is that petrol oil has Hado of much fear and grudge and they affect human bodies negatively.

Of course it is an idea without scientific proof and I am ready to receive any criticism on this.

Recently the birth of alternative energy which can be replaced by oils have been announced in Japan. It is actually energy extracted from water which demonstrated my idea to extract energies from water that I have been telling for 20 years. It is the technology to extract safe energy called oxy-hydrogen gas from water. You can see the technology from the following video.

Oils are necessary for human beings but if you think about ecological view point, it is not favorable. That is what most of people think but because there are not really other alternative energy sources not many people pointed objections to that. However, finally we have the technology to get an
alternative energy that can be replaced by oils.

“Water is a mirror of our mind” that is what I was taught by water and it is now important to support this technology to be used everywhere in daily life.

I believe lot of people who involved fishery industries in Mexico Gulf are suffering now but as for economic issues, U.S government and other countries will support them and give an utmost response to it. Important thing is that we learn from this mistake and make sure this type of things will never happen in the future and protect nature environment thus we have to take this technology to get energy from water very seriously. I really hope this technology will be available and used for everybody as soon as possible.

Now let’s give energy of love and gratitude to all the living creatures in Mexico Gulf by praying like this.

To whales, dolphins, pelicans, fishes, shellfishes, planktons, corals, algae and all creatures in the Gulf of Mexico.

While I believe that the Earth is much older and wiser than any of us, that she can heal in her own sweet time and at her own pace, and that she will endure no matter what, I also began wondering what I could do.

I could give offerings and ask forgiveness for my human brothers and sisters who are making such grievous mistakes.

I could learn from my own mistakes, and make choices and take actions that would have me living in much better alignment with the Earth. I could change my ways, let go of systems that don’t work, and begin living in a more sustainable and honorable way. And then teach my children that, and speak about it to others so they may feel inspired to do the same.

I could join with people, who need comfort, and offer up prayers – for those things in our society that are out of alignment to fall away; for people’s hearts to open and shift their ways if they are disharmonious with the Earth; and for the Earth herself, if only to offer the message “I hear you. I will look inward and shift my ways. And I bless you.”

The mere act of connecting with the Earth – slowing down to watch her movements and moods – causes something within our hearts to awaken. We are connected.

In the film The Living Matrix, there was mention of a project – the Global Coherence Initiative. After speaking with Filmmaker Greg Becker, he mentioned that this Initiative might just be doing some work around the oil calamity. I looked it up. This project, launched by the Institute of HeartMath®, can be described below:

• Empower environmental responsibility and stewardship of the planet

The Global Coherence Initiative will include an important scientific measurement component. Advanced sensing technology, now being developed at the Institute of HeartMath, will allow us to observe changes in the earth’s magnetic field and test the hypothesis that the earth’s field is affected by mass human emotion, positive or negative. The Global Coherence Monitoring System (GCMS) will consist of approximately 12 sensors strategically located around the world. This system will enable a new level of scientific inquiry into the relationship between the earth’s magnetic field, collective human emotions and behaviors, and planetary changes.

The GCMS will allow us to test the hypotheses that:

• Strong collective human emotions are reflected in the earth’s field.
• Groups of people in heart coherence can affect the earth’s field.
• Changes in the earth’s field predict earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and similar planetary scale events, in order to give people advance warning

Our long-term goal is to correlate the following: coherence-level data collected from the GCI community with changes in the earth’s magnetic field, along with changes in various social, environmental and health outcomes.

I signed up myself, and have yet to explore the vast information shared on this site, and have yet to enter into the Global Care Room where I can join others in Heart Coherence sessions. At least I can offer good, heart-centered energy instead of fearful and angry energy. Perhaps that alone will make the Earth’s job of healing that much easier.
