Airstream Pilgrimage—Beyond Words’ Publisher Embarks on a Journey

It’s not often in our busy lives that many of us are able to step back and take a long journey to discover something new about ourselves or the world around us. But it’s no mystery that a long journey can re-define us, break us of old habits, and begin anew. We’ve been talking a lot about the hero’s journey around the office. In Joseph Campbell’s The Hero with a Thousand Faces he states:

A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man.

But the hero’s journey doesn’t have to involve large battles, doesn’t have to concern life or death, it can be simple, quiet, and just as life-altering. One of our own, president and editor-in-chief Cynthia Black, is about to embark on such a journey, and she’s decided to share her adventures on her new blog, Airstream Pilgrimage. There, you can follow Cynthia as she first travels to Tuscany, and then embarks on her year-long journey around the United States in an Airstream trailer. Read as she muses life’s big questions and some of the small ones, too.

Everyone here at Beyond Words is excited for what is sure to be an inspiring journey. We invite you to follow as well.

Avoid the Pitfalls: Portia Nelson’s 35th Anniversary Edition of There’s A Hole In My Sidewalk

A pocket companion of self-discovery, There’s a Hole in My Sidewalk has quickly become my go-to book for quick, humorous, inspirational bits that enlighten my day. And now, with the beautiful 35th anniversary edition, this book has found a permanent spot in my purse.

“These pieces have had a bit of trouble finding a comfortable concept that would knit them into one book…just as I have had difficulty molding a multi-faceted misfit into one person.”

Portia Nelson first released what she referred to as a book of “pieces of me” in 1977. Since then, There’s a Hole in My Sidewalk has gone on to become a well-loved classic. Portia’s humor, inspiration, and insight have touched thousand’s of people. Her poems provide a clear, honest depiction of self-reflection, inner conflict, and personal struggle all with a clear message of hope in the end.

Portia was a true renaissance woman who made waves as an actress, singer, author, composer, painter, and more. In this timeless classic, Portia has shared with us a legacy that will last the ages.

Let this book help you find a “small pin-point of self-awareness” and strip away the false images. After all, as Portia says:

“Knowing one’s own feelings and being able to trust them is the difference between existing and living.”

In Her Power: Take Charge of the 9 Facets of a Woman’s Power

Helene Lerner is a powerful woman, there’s no doubt about that—an Emmy award winning executive producer, workplace consultant, accomplished freelance journalist, and founder of one of the premier sites for women, womenworking.com. In her new book, In Her Power, Helene shares the secrets of her success, including the many barriers and challenges she faced personally and channels the lessons she learned to help women everywhere claim the innate power they have within them.

According to Helene, “A woman’s power is multifaceted and has nine dimensions. As a woman seeks to discover her unique talents and gifts, she challengers her fears and moves forward despite them. She begins to better appreciate all aspects of herself and acts more genuinely as a result. She becomes more confident and transparent with herself and others, not afraid to express her desires, including her sexual needs.”

The book goes on to address the 9 common barriers that block a woman’s true self-empowerment. Helen’s approach is gentle but firm, compassionate yet discipline, and eminently practical. Quizzes, exercises, and real-life testimonials from the many women Helene has helped make this book a practical how-to guide for women’s empowerment—both at work and in the home.

Say goodbye to the days when women had to choose between work or family. Today’s woman has it all, and In Her Power will help women not only achieve a work-life balance but take hold of everything they want to get out of life and more.
